CENSUS 2010
Every 10 years the U.S. Census counts every person living in America. In March you will receive your Census form in the mail. Why should you complete and return this form?
MINNESOTA COUNTS! · Over $7 billion is spent in Minnesota by the federal government based on the outcome of the Census. · This means about $1,300 is spent per Minnesota resident.
LABORERS WORK! · Over $850 million of the highway construction funds spent in Minnesota are based on the outcome of the Census. · The number of schools and hospitals built in Minnesota during the next 10 years will be based on the outcome of the Census.
LABORERS VOICE! · The number of Minnesota representatives in Congress is based on the outcome of the Census. · Minnesota may lose one of its 8 Congresspeople based on this year’s Census. This could dramatically diminish our influence in Washington and seriously affect the federal resources available in Minnesota.

The Laborers Union Encourages CENSUS 2010 Participation The Laborers Union knows that you count. Every 10 years, the U.S. conducts a census of the population by sending a form in the mail to every household in the country. Census data is private and confidential and is used in a variety of important decisions, including where to allocate $400 billion in federal funds each year; where roads, bridges, and schools will be built, and apportioning how many federal, state, and local government leaders will represent us. It’s important that union members and our families are counted so that our communities can get our fair share of jobs, funding, representation, and respect. Watch for more information from your union on Census activities leading up to Census Day, April 1. Here are some frequently asked questions about the Census. Who is counted in the Census? The Census counts every person who is living in the U.S. – regardless of age, and citizenship. How is the Census taken? Census forms will be mailed to households in mid-March 2010. Census forms must be mailed back on or before April 1, 2010. If you need assistance in filling out forms, contact your union to get more information about resources to help you fill out your form What if I don’t mail back my Census form? Households not returning a Census form will be called or visited by a Census worker. What is on the Census form? The form is a simple, one-page, 10-question form that will take less than 10 minutes to complete. It asks for information about the number of people living in your household and their race, age, and gender. Is the Census form only in English? Forms will generally be mailed in English, with some bilingual English/Spanish forms mailed in selected areas. Other language forms will be available by calling the request line on the back of the English form. Is the information taken by the Census private? Information given on the Census form is 100% confidential. By law, census information is not shared with any other government agency.
